LDD is unique because we have the capability to both manage and self-perform work on projects. We employ a full-time staff and have a fleet of equipment that allows us to complete work on site. Working on site allows us to achieve a quicker start on projects, and have better control of scheduling and quality. See our Services section for a list of services self performed.
LDD currently manages $15 to $20 million each year in construction contracts, which include a mix of industrial and building construction for public and private owners. Typically projects undertaken by LDD include water and wastewater treatment plants, manufacturing plants, renovated buildings, schools, parks, etc. LDD also excels in Design-Build projects.
We are highly geared toward technology through the use of computerized accounting, estimating, scheduling, communications, design drafting, and project management. The entire scope of each project is tracked by computer software from start to finish. Our open communication approach to each project makes the more efficient to better complete every job to the satisfaction of our clients.

Gedeon Docsa left Hungary in 1905 with the onset of World War I to seek a new life in America. Once he arrived in America he worked at Kalmazoo Paraffine while running his own construction company on the side.
His son, Leslie Docsa, was born in 1923. Leslie helped his father as a residential builder in his early years. Once Leslie returned from service in World War II (where he fought on Omaha Beach, was shot, and lost a lung), he found the family business was destroyed by the depression. Leslie began to rebuild the family business from the ground up. Docsa-Smith was established in 1958 with a local building inspector, Bill Smith and Leslie performing residential and light commercial building.
Leslie Docsa's only son David was born in 1943. David began helping his father as a child with the family business. David went to college at Chicago Technological University after graduating from Kalamazoo Central in 1961. David graduated from college in 1965 with a degree in Architectural Engineering and has earned his Professional Engineering License in the state of Michigan and Florida. David worked on several projects in Ohio and Iowa before moving back to Kalamazoo in 1967. David brought his talents into the business as Vice President. David's engineering experience allowed them to construct more diversified and large-scale projects. With the addition to David to the family business the company name was change in 1990 to L.D. Docsa Associates, Inc.
David has two (2) sons, Jason born in 1969 and Aaron in 1971. Both of David's sons helped father and grandfather with the family business as they where growing up. Jason earned his Civil Engineering degree from Michigan Technological University in 1991 and earned his Professional Engineering License for the state of Michigan. Aaron earned his Construction Management degree from Arizona State in 1994. Jason has worked on several heavy construction projects throughout Minnesota, Idaho, and West Virginia. Jason returned to Kalamazoo 1997 to join the family business. Aaron is working for a construction company located in Texas.
L.D. Docsa (DOH-suh) Associates, Inc., LDD for short, is a Kalamazoo-based, family-owned contractor incorporated in 1962, but has actually existed for nearly 100 years.
What we believe sets us apart from other contractors is our versatility. Our 28-person staff includes superintendents, a general superintendent, foremen and project managers with complete construction backgrounds who are very involved with our projects in a “shovels in the ground” sort of way.
